HANDS-ON EXPERIENCIAL LEARNING IS THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE NATURE.
Designed to enhance school curriculums for grades 1 to 12. Camp Wood’s Outdoor School program challenges students with a diversity of study topics for 1/2 day up to multi day experiences. The conservation minded classes are geared to the student level. Activities build an atmosphere where learning is fun as well as an unforgettable experience. Each Outdoor School program is customized especially for your students' needs. Whether it's to give them experiences they will never have in there home surroundings or to enhance their classroom work, everyone will go away with a memorable experience.

Camp Wood offers an excellent opportunity to observe and study one of the last preserved remnants of the Great Plains. The variety of resources at Camp Wood allows students to explore the natural world through stimulating and exciting hands-on activities. Camp Wood also offers opportunities to include revreational activities within each program.

CLASS TOPICS
PRAIRIE LIFE
Learn and look for the characteristics, key species and conservation practices of the Flint Hills Tall Grass Prairie. Learn the big four grasses native to the Flint Hills.

REPTILE & AMPHIBIANS
Become more comfortable with the reptiles and amphibians of the Flint Hills. Learn to properly handle the animals and distinguish characteristics unique to each.

OUR FURRY FRIENDS
Discover the unique and sometimes unusual characteristics of mammals. Explore habitats, niches, and predator / prey relationships.

BIRDS OF A FEATHER
Learn important characteristics of local birds as well as studying the different habitats and niches they occupy.

FISHING
Take a turn learning to use a rod & reel and catch your own fishin' in Lake Hall.

THE FOSSIL PIT
Get an interesting glimpse into part of our Earth’s geological history. Study the rock formations and how they came to be as well as a fascinating hands-on look at Camp Wood’s fossils.

ORIENTEERING
Learn to use a compass and go through a short course.

LIFE & DEATH
A great game to learn survival. Each student takes a roll of carnivore, herbavore and omnivore and must try to survive each game.

OUTDOOR COOKING
Learn several different ways to build a fire and cook a yummy treat using the fire.

STREAM EXPLORATION
Dig in the stream to look for macroinvertebrates and use a dicotomos key to identify each.

BOOKING INFORMATION

Choose the length of program to meet the needs of your group. Half-day, full day, and extended day outings can be booked.

Weekday trips can be booked from September 1st to Mid August. Weekend openings are available from September 1st through Mid August.
