The Borgelt Family enjoys attending Family Camp and the togetherness they feel away from the distractions of modern life.
Most of us have a similar picture in our heads of the perfect family vacation–the sun is shining, our children are happily playing together and everyone is relaxed and having fun. However, after all the hard work of planning, once vacation actually begins the reality of navigating a strange city to make it to all the activities you’ve planned can be less than ideal. Sometimes, it even feels like parents end up needing a vacation after their vacation! With this in mind, Camp Wood YMCA has designed our all-inclusive family camps to take the stress out of planning and enjoying a family getaway.
The key to a relaxing vacation is a flexible schedule that works for each member of your family. During family camps, we offer open blocks of time for camp activities like canoeing, horseback riding, and archery so families can spend as much or as little time at each activity as they’d like. In between activities, it’s a leisurely stroll to your cabin for more sunscreen or to the lodge where all our family-friendly meals are served buffet-style.
Families loved learning new skills at archery during last year’s Harvest Family Camp.
Another popular new feature is our Parent’s Afternoon Out. During this time, Camp Wood staff supervise young children during fun outdoor activities. Meanwhile, parents can explore a different camp activity—like canoeing or horseback riding–together. One mom told us, “This is the very best part. I know my children are having fun and I get to spend time alone with my husband!”
For years, our Memorial Day and Labor Day family camps have been a cherished tradition for many families. We’ve loved getting to know these families and watching them build relationships and enjoy time together. In fact, we’ve enjoyed family camps so much that we we’ve added several family camp weekends to our spring, summer, and fall schedules. Explore upcoming family camps.
Family Camp Director, Katey Noel, reflects on the weekends she’s witnessed over the last year, “My favorite part of family camp is talking with adults and children as they experience camp together. I enjoy watching and hearing about the creativity that flows at arts & crafts, the excitement of riding a horse on the prairie, or the thrill shared by climbing the Alpine Tower. I love bringing the magic of camp to families of all sizes and ages.”
One of our family camp participants, Scarlett Borgelt, said it best: “Camp Wood has been a favorite in our house for years. Our family absolutely loves to camp. It is honestly the best way we can think of to take a vacation together. We enjoy the togetherness we can have away from all the distractions of modern life as well as the relationships we have the opportunity to build with other people.”
Whether you are bringing your immediate family or are coordinating a family reunion with several families, we’d love to make your dream of a fun and relaxing family vacation a reality through one of our many Family Camp programs. Learn more about our upcoming Family Camps and register today.
