This year has brought several changes to our full-time staff team. In April, we welcomed Katie Sutton as our new Program Director. After the summer, Katie moved into the role of Chief Operating Officer at Camp Wood! We then hired Meghan Burke, also known as Pascal from this past summer, as our new Program Director.
Katie is originally from England and worked her first summer with Camp Wood in 2008. From there she worked three more summers, two as an international intern. Meghan spent this past summer as our Equestrian Coordinator but has attended and been on staff at camp for years!
Over the past few weeks, we took some time to ask them a few questions about themselves!
What’s your background with Camp Wood YMCA?
Katie: I was an international staff member in summer 2008 and 2009. I did many different roles including lifeguarding, media, and program support. In 2010 and 2011, I was an intern with the YUSA internship program. And I was leadership staff with Jill and assisted Anne with retreats conferences.
Meghan: I started off at Camp Wood as a camper in 2005 and have not missed a summer since. I went through the Horse and IT program before becoming a staff member in 2017. In 2019, I was the Leadership Coordinator and in 2021, I was the Equestrian Coordinator. It was amazing being able to plan, implement and run the programs I grew up in.
How has Camp Wood changed you?
Katie: Camp Wood gave me the opportunities to build confidence in leadership roles and helped solidify my decisions to pursue a career in the camping industry.
Meghan: Camp Wood has taught me how to be myself and how to love everyone and everything. It has given me the opportunity to go out of my comfort zone and do things that I never thought I would be able to do. Camp is an amazing place to be able to grow and learn skills that you might not learn anywhere else. It is really where you find yourself and who you are. I would not be the person I am today without having Camp Wood in my life.
What are you most excited for in your new role?
Katie: Continue to grow and build camp as a place for everyone. The possibilities are endless. Being able to support campers and whatever the future holds for them but also support staff that pass through the proverbial cabin doors and help them on their own journey as well.
Meghan: I am excited to try new and innovative things while trying to bring the camp magic and memories to every person, camper, parent and staff alike that I had as a camper and continue to have as a staff member. Something I love to see every year is the campers that come every summer and to see how much they change and grow. It is even more amazing when I see campers become staff members. Camp connects everyone together in such a unique way and I love to see it grow each and every year.
What’s something very few people know about you?
Katie: I am a musical theatre fanatic and know many musicals word for word ( lyrics and dialogue ). I can also juggle 2 basketballs in one hand.
Meghan: I enjoy doing impressions (I was known for my impressions this past summer).
What do you think is at the end of a rainbow?
Katie: Whatever makes your heart happy!
Meghan: Something magical.
We are so excited to have both Katie and Meghan on staff and are confident they will bring all the fun, energy, and adventure to this upcoming summer!
