Leadership Camp

Our Leadership Camps are designed to develop the confidence and skills of older campers interested in becoming leaders at Camp Wood and in their schools and communities. Leadership campers get to stay in the IT (in-training) village of yurts.

Leaders-in-Training

Our Leaders-in-Training programs are geared towards teens ages 14 through 17 who are interested in exploring their strengths, building confidence and practicing skills that will make them good leaders. We offer 2 Leaders-in-Training programs: LEAD and EXPLORE.

LIT 1 (LEAD)

The Leaders-in-Training LEAD program is for campers ages 14 and 15 and is an introductory leadership course lasting 2 weeks. LEAD campers spend mornings together participating in hands-on skill-building and team-building challenges. Afternoons and evenings are spent participating in and sometimes leading activities with the rest of camp. LEAD gives campers a solid foundation in leadership to use at home, school and in their communities while teaching skills and self-confidence that will last a lifetime. This is an excellent first step for campers who wish to join the staff at Camp Wood YMCA one day.

Counselors-In-Training

If you’ve always dreamed of being a leader at Camp Wood, then join us for 2 weeks as a Counselor-in-Training. You’ll learn leadership, first aid, teaching, and recreational programming techniques that will prepare you to work as a future counselor. After your first week, you will gain hands-on experience working with campers and small groups. During the second week, CITs will use their newly acquired skills while serving as assistant leaders. Campers in this program will be evaluated on their performance and camp staff will assess whether they have earned a recommendation for hire when they become eligible for a staff position. Graduates of the Counselor-in-Training program have a competitive advantage over others when applying for staff positions.

Wranglers-in-Training

If you love working with kids as much as you love horses, join us for 2 weeks as a Wrangler-in-Training. During this program, you’ll be given the opportunity to perfect your equestrian skills while passing along passion and knowledge to others. This program is designed for strong riders who hope to become Camp Wood YMCA wranglers when they turn 18. Wranglers-in-Training spend their days up at the barn practicing their riding skills and learning how to safely teach horsemanship and animal care to children. WITs will also have the opportunity to participate in general camp activities. At the end of your participation in the program, our experienced wranglers will test your newly acquired skills, offer feedback on your performance in the program, and assess whether you have earned a recommendation for hire when you become eligible for a wrangler position.
